Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, before he publicly stated that the board had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
