Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
