The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
